The many sites of Cairo (Egypt)

Posted by: Melanie12th January, 2006

After the amazing sights of the Pyramids our second day of sightseeing involved learning about Islam, visiting a Mosque, seeing how Papyrus scrolls are made and taking in the sites at the Cairo museum to name a few.

I am so glad Big grin we have come to Egypt during the winter time. The weather is actually a perfect 20 degrees Celsius or just below and I don’t really have to be conscious of covering up as there is no overwhelming heat to put up with. In Egypt you are not really forced to cover your self up, however as a female you would probably receive some unwanted Annoyed attention. I think I have lost count of how many times local men have said ‘lucky man’ to Josip and it’s only our third day here.

Around 94% of Egypt’s population is Muslim and most of the rest are Coptic Christians. The Mosque we went to visit is the Mosque of Muhammad ‘Ali Pasha which was built between 1828 and 1848. Perched on the summit of the citadel, this Ottoman mosque, the largest to be built in the first half of the 19th Century, is, with its animated silhouette and twin minarets, the most visible mosque in Cairo. If you want to know more about the history follow this link Muhammad Ali’s Cairo You will find out who Muhammad Ali was and how important he was in Egypt. By the way I am not talking about the boxer!

Our flight to Egypt Pharaohwas the longest we’ve had since flying from Singapore to Europe. So when we arrived in Cairo we were so wrecked and Mel was grumpy Mad due to the crappy food on the plane. The long awaited snow! (Zamrsje)

Posted by: Melanie3rd January, 2006

The snow in Karlovac was just beautiful especially where our grandparents live in Zamrsje. Josip and I managed to go for a really long nice walk in the snow. Man it was hard work and I was so hot with all the snow clothes we had on. We actually spotted six deer’s Rudolphwhile we were walking through the snow it was so amazing. I managed to take some video footage but was shaking a bit as I was so excited. We then tried to run through snow that was like knee deep but of course it was to much hard work for me and I almost dropped dead. And of course there was no way we would catch up with the light footed creatures. Jos took some cool pictures which are below:

Novi Vinodolski (Croatia)

Posted by: Melanie19th December, 2005

Well here we are again in Croatia! But this time we got to see a few different faces and places. My dad’s sister Anna moved from Australia with her husband and three kids about 5 years ago to come and make a new life in a coastal town called Novi Vinodolski. I was really excited as the kids would have changed so much Marinko the oldest is now 21 a fully grown man with facial hair and all. It was really cool seeing them all with their newly developed Croatian accents and it was funny when they had forgotten the way some things were said in English and I had to remind them.

Trieste (Italy)

Posted by: Melanie18th December, 2005

From Venice we made our way by bus to a town in northern Italy called Trieste. It was really just a stop over on the way to Croatia as you can catch buses from Trieste to Rijeka (Croatia). It’s the cheap way to get to Croatia as flights are still not super cheap like some other European cities. It’s a pretty big coastal town but I am sure it would be much nicer in summer as it was a bit Coldchilly. The place only has one youth hostel and it was a bit crap. It was closed between 12 noon and 4pm and the rooms were really basic and don’t even start me on the breakfast. Well at least it was cheap.

Venice (Italy)

Venice is a well known city in Italy which is also known as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It definitely has a wonderful and old feel but I bet no one told you about the dog shit Shit that is smeared all over the city floor and I’m sure on everyone’s expensive Italian shoes. Besides the dog poop problem it is quite an intriguing city and you can easily get lost through the small narrow streets.

Stone Henge and Salisbury

Posted by: Josip5th November, 2005

Today we decided to get away from the concrete jungle (London) and headed off to Stone Henge and Salisbury for a weekend day trip. Stone henge is a prehistoric monument in Britain and is a World Heritage site that is roughly 5 thousand years old. It took us around 2 hours from central London to get to the site and it was well worth the bus ride.
