Our baby boy Josip was due to be born on the 21st of September. However he had other plans and made a surprise speedy arrival two and bit weeks early on the 5th of September 2009. He arrived a day before Fathers Day and was a lovely present for his Daddy.
This pregnancy was completely different to Lily and as many of you know we knew we were having a little boy and were both very excited. As the day was getting closer I was so tired chasing after Lily who had just started walking and I really was so over being big and heavy. It all started when I went for my afternoon nap and as Jos came in the room to ask me a question; I rolled over and knew this was it as I felt a gush of waters. I think Jos uttered something like “Oh shit” and was worried as little Josip was a bit early. But baby was definitely ready and as we rushed around the house all panicked I couldn’t help but laugh at Lily. She kept unpacking my suitcase and was walking around the house with my toiletries like she was holding a handbag.
We dropped Lily of at my parent’s house and we were supposed to stop in Melton at my In-laws on the way to the hospital, but as I suspected the contractions were too intense and only 3 mins apart as soon as they started. This labour was much better than the first time as I had a lovely midwife Kim who along with my wonderful husband helped me through each contraction. No pain relief necessary, once again it was a quick one and in total it took 2hrs and 35mins for little Josip to be safely in our arms. He was born at 7pm, weighing 3.465kg and was 52cms long. It was kind of freaky that Lily was born at 7am and Josip at 7pm and having my waters broke at the exact same time as well. But Josip’s delivery was shorter as the contractions did not start until 1 hour after my waters broke. This was a blessing as it gave us just enough time to drop Lily off at my parent’s house and get to the hospital safely.
Our little boy gave us a fright as he had the cord tightly wrapped twice around his neck and knotted like a shoe lace, and as a result he was a little purple and needed some oxygen to breathe again but after a few minutes he was crying and pink. Once again I lost too much blood but this time did not need to go theatre or did I need a blood transfusion which was a huge relief. We arrived home on the Monday and we were looking forward to settling into a routine with our two beautiful children. Lily’s reaction to Josip has been quite cute and all she wants to do is hug and kiss him which is very sweet. But it can be annoying when you’re trying to eat or get something done and she wants “baby” right now or else she chucks a toddler tantrum.
So far Josip has been a dream baby who took to the breast like a duck to water and has no problems getting rid of his gas like his sister did and settles back to sleep quite easily after a feed. He is a massive piggy when it comes to feeding and just can’t get enough. At his 2 week check up with the health nurse he put on a whopping 500grams in only 12 days. The nurse was quite impressed as 280 to 360 grams for the 2 weeks is usually the average. So I am guessing he will be a chubby bubby like his sister in no time. He is a real cutie and at the moment is a mixture of his Daddy and Uncle Thomas.
Here are some more photos of our little angel in his first few weeks of life. We would like to say thanks to all those who sent there well wishes and look forward to seeing you all soon.
Oh my, he certainly is gorgeous! Congratulations and so happy to hear all is going well. Lovely to read your story and see these photos Mel! What a joy huh! I can not relate to such a short labour but I can relate to those few terrifying minutes upon delivery where you wonder if your beautiful baby is ok. What a relief (and what an impressive effort on his part getting the cord around his neck not once but twice and tying it in a knot to finish off!) to hear those first screams. Take care and thanks for the email notification about this (and I recall that you asked about our blog so I will send you the link!) Annwen xo

What a trooper you are Mel, obviously meant to have babies. How lovely that you had such a good birth, I hope my next one is as good as my first too, a bit shorter will be nice. Maybe not 2.5 hours, thats a bit quick for me! Josip is gorgeous, we must catch up soon. Glad to hear all is going well. X
